Course introduction

Modernization brought about by digital innovation has created an exponential number of changes in people’s daily activities. These changes include the behavior and expectations in the operation of various businesses. As a result, the way businesses operate need to accommodate various needs and expectations. These changes affect businesses in all sectors, including manufacturing, service, and even government. Any business that cannot adapt and keep up with the changes that occur will inevitably find itself at a disadvantage in terms of competitiveness and profitability. It may affect its very survival.

The Thai government realizes the importance of digital technology and innovation. Recent policies have been enacted to support Thailand in the field of digital technology and to prepare the country both economically and socially to compete in ASEAN (AEC) as well as on the global stage with the use of technology and digital innovation as driving forces. The government defines the digital economy as the economy of the new age. Rooted and driven by information technology, communication, and stakeholders that move the country forward, it is essential that the government and private sector maintain good corporate governance in the form of guidelines about the use of technology.

Digital technology should be used with an open mind and creative manner to generate added value and competitiveness at the international level and to drive all dimensions of the economic goals related to finance, manufacturing, and innovation. The government relies on digital innovation to provide basic services that improve the quality of Thai peoples’ lives, be it health, education, or safety in life and property.  Furthermore, innovation and digital technology serve as tools to increase the efficiency of work in a systematic manner and permit coordination between the relevant departments. As for the private sector, innovation and digital technology are important mechanisms for enhancing the customer experience.

Business models that respond to changing lifestyles bring about new business opportunities.

The national development approach is one such model, utilizing the digital economy concept for economic and social development. Through this model, it can be seen that the success of organizations often depends on how effectively they apply technology and digital innovation.

It is inevitable that companies and organizations in the country will have to adapt to this changing environment.  Leveraging technology and digital innovation is an essential part of enhancing business operations, whether to create a positive experience for customers, to optimize organizational processes, create new business models, or analyze Big Data to enhance decision-making.  However, transforming a business or creating a new digital business is more than just a matter of acquiring digital technology with the hope that it will increase efficiency.  The organization must be able to make full and effective use of the technology and digital innovation. To do this, an organization must become a Digital Master with senior management acting in Digital Leadership roled to build Digital Capability, thus maintaining personnel who understand the potential of digital technology and innovation to increase efficiency.

It is for these reasons that the Master of Science Program in Digital Business Transformation has been developed to meet the needs of the country in accordance with the concepts of the digital economy, which is increasingly important in the developing world. The program in Digital Policy and Management focuses on empowering human resources by emphasizing knowledge and understanding of the digital economy and the means to implement it for maximum benefit for sustainable national development.  Additionally, an understanding of how to plan and implement concrete action in the digital economy is emphasized.  The Data Science program, on the other hand, focuses on leveraging advanced data analytics capabilities, bypassing the limitations of complex and fragmented data structures using advanced statistical models and tools, and utilizing artificial intelligence to acquire information. The resulting information is powerful and supportive in decision-making and thus drives the public and private sectors.
